Safety & Contraindications
for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
At Chamblee Hyperbarics & Performance Institute, your safety is our highest priority. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves treatment in a high-pressure, oxygen-rich environment. While this can provide powerful healing benefits, it also requires strict adherence to safety guidelines to prevent potential hazards. Below you’ll find detailed information about materials, medical conditions, and behaviors that may interfere with the safety or effectiveness of HBOT.
🔥 Flammable & Combustible Materials
No Open Flames or Butane Devices
Due to the elevated oxygen levels in the chamber, matches, lighters, or any butane-based devices are strictly prohibited. Oxygen-enriched environments significantly increase the risk of fire, and even small sparks can become hazardous.
Petroleum-Based Products
Avoid using petroleum-based ointments, creams, or gels before treatment. These substances are highly flammable and pose a combustion risk in a pressurized chamber. Always consult your provider about any topical products you use.
Makeup & Nail Polish
Cosmetics and nail polish—especially those applied within 12 hours before treatment—often contain flammable compounds. For your safety, please arrive for your session with a clean, product-free face and nails.
📱 Electronic Devices & Metals
No Electronics in the Chamber
Devices such as mobile phones, tablets, earbuds, or smartwatches are not permitted inside the chamber. They can cause interference with medical equipment and present electrical hazards.
Implanted Medical Devices
Patients with pacemakers, cochlear implants, or other electronic implants must inform our team before starting therapy. Special precautions or alternative care protocols may be necessary.
Jewelry & Metal Objects
Remove all metal items before entering the chamber, including rings, necklaces, watches, eyeglasses (unless approved), or clothing with metal fasteners. Metal can cause burns or conduct electricity under pressure.
👕 Clothing & Fabric Guidelines
Avoid Synthetic Fabrics
Clothing made from nylon, polyester, or other synthetic materials can generate static electricity, increasing fire risk. Only 100% cotton garments and linens—provided by our facility—are allowed.
No Clothing with Metal Fasteners
Please wear clothing that is free of zippers, buttons, snaps, or other metallic elements. These can become hot or conductive in the chamber.
🧴 Personal Care Products
Hair & Skin Products
Avoid the use of hairsprays, gels, or styling creams, as well as lotions, perfumes, or deodorants containing alcohol or other flammable ingredients. Only use products approved by your provider.
Sprays & Aerosols
Any spray-based or flammable personal care products must be avoided on the day of treatment. Always check ingredient labels or consult our team if you are unsure.
🩺 Medical Considerations
Conditions Requiring Medical Clearance
Some conditions may require special evaluation or may be contraindications for HBOT. These include:
-
Untreated air or gas embolism
-
Uncontrolled high fever
-
Seizure disorders
-
Chronic lung conditions, such as COPD or pulmonary hypertension
Please consult with your referring provider or a member of our medical team before beginning treatment.
Medication Interactions
Certain medications can interact with HBOT, including:
-
Specific chemotherapy agents
-
Antibiotics such as doxycycline or tetracycline
-
Drugs that increase photosensitivity
A full medication review will be conducted prior to starting therapy.
🍽️ Food & Drink Guidelines
Before Your Session
We recommend eating a light meal 1–2 hours before your session. Avoid heavy meals, as they may lead to discomfort, nausea, or vomiting during treatment.
Avoid Alcohol
Do not consume alcohol before your session. Alcohol can impair your body’s response to oxygen and increase the risk of side effects.
No Gum or Candy
Chewing gum or sucking on candy during your session is not allowed, as this poses a choking hazard in a pressurized environment.
🤧 Illness & Other Hazards
Cold, Flu, or Respiratory Symptoms
Please reschedule your appointment if you are experiencing congestion, coughing, or other cold/flu symptoms. These can interfere with ear pressure equalization and worsen during treatment.
Contagious Conditions
For the safety of other patients and staff, individuals with infectious diseases or skin conditions must be evaluated before receiving therapy.
Post-Treatment Pressure Changes
Avoid flying or traveling to high altitudes immediately after treatment, as rapid pressure changes can negatively impact recovery.
💧 Lifestyle Considerations for Safer Therapy
Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration improves oxygen delivery, supports tissue healing, and reduces the risk of side effects. Drink water before and after your sessions unless otherwise directed.
Monitor Your Progress
Ongoing check-ups allow our medical team to monitor your health and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Smoking cessation, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress reduction all help improve your body’s healing response and maximize the benefits of hyperbaric therapy.
